Wick Burns

I got to play with some rather hefty Moonblaze-style heads last week and they were excessively fun! The flames were enormous, the chain rig was pretty sweet and overall it was great fun to play with them. However, I did come across something that is, I think, quite a serious issue in poi head design sometimes. The kevlar was so loosely woven that the heads started to disintegrate as the fire had spread to inside the head. ...

Aberdeen Stories

After my lovely trip up to the Frozen North to catch up with friends long absent I brought back tunes, videos and stories! So firstly, massive thanks to my perpetually happy friend Corinne, I’ve been introduced to Blogotheque which has lots of delicious, crunchy and smooth music from all manner of artists on. Here’s one that I love especially As well as discovering new music, Corinne, Cat and I got to geek out over poi for about 6 odd hours which was many different kinds of fun. ...

Tornado Wicks - Post Burn

Ok, so as I mentioned in my previous post on the topic – I made some lovely new Tornado wicks (so called after the Tornado weave that is used to make them), following Jez’s instructions on the topic and with some modifications that Alien Jon and I came up with. On Sunday I got the chance to play with them alight and after some fairly heavy thrashing I can now post a pretty balanced review. ...

Tornado Wicks - The Making Of

The backstory So for a while I’ve been researching into making some new fire poi heads to replace my HoP 90mm monkeyfist heads that I got from Alien Jon. The monkeys are great but they’re heavy and because they’re spherical, they tend to smack into one another frequently which annoys me somewhat. Added to which, they have a massive I-bolt embedded in the core and the eyelet of the bolt is absolutely enormous – about 30mm across. ...

Finding The G Spot - London

So a while ago, I posted this lovely video of G doing his thing: Well, a few days ago, my long-lost twin brother Joe and crazy Scottish hug monkey Cat came down to visit and we went to do the touristy thing in London by way of Buckingham Palace. We got to the Queen Vic fountain in front and got some toys out for photos. 2 hours later, we left with a video and made a lot of people very happy indeed! ...

Communities!

Hello!! After much procrastination, sitting around on my arse and pawing ineffectually at the screen like a slack-jawed Luddite, I’ve sorted us out a website after Jan poked me and bribed me with Pretzels! It’s essentially a blog and community site for the firespinning folk I’m friends with to hang out, post pictures, musings and so forth. Also, since we do Burn The Beach meets on a regular basis, I thought a website would be cool for when people invariably ask “Who ARE you guys? ...

Southern Lights - Full-Fat Edition

Right. Now that I actually have time to post a real entry about SL, here goes. To begin with, I wasn’t going to go to Southern Lights as I was quite simply too poor to afford a ticket. Thankfully, the gorgeous Safire stepped in and offered me one of hers in exchange for hugs on demand. A fair trade. The festival kicked off on Friday the 11th, but I was booked that day to celebrate a friend finishing exams. ...

Poi!

I first got introduced to poi about 6 months ago and have been steadily getting better and dragging people into it as I go along. It’s a wonderfully relaxing hobby and does wonders for your coordination and proprioception (perceiving your own self as opposed to perception, which means perceiving the world around you). Some alcohol and a certain holly bush was involved in my first forays into poi spinning but I persevered and now I’ve returned from an absolutely fantastic trip from Bali, courtesy of Nick Woolsey, G and a whole host of other flow artists over at Playpoi. ...
