Bruce Shapiro is an artist and zen garden enthusiast with a side hobby in computer controlled motion. So he invented this. The Sisyphus machine. It features a flat bed covered in a thin layer of sand, over which steel ball bearings are guided by magnets under the table’s surface. Over time, it makes beautiful patterns like these. The original has since amassed 170 million hits on YouTube and has spawned a bunch of spinoff clips, including a version from Cinesaurus about the Curiosity Rover. About this time last year, I shot a bunch of nude photos with a friend of mine for her life modelling portfolio as she needed to get pictures to people. I saw this project on thisiscolossal.com and I’m determined to make this into a piece to go on my wall. This is so simple and elegant and, frankly, amazing. All credit goes to thisiscolossal and crafterall for finding and making this!

I shot some macros outside in the garden just after it had finished raining and yet again I had to salvage them from my memory card which became unreadable. It’s time to get a new memory card, I think! This one is about 3 years old and it’s quite honestly running out of I/O capacity!  One of my white roses!  

I shot this a good while back – about a year ago, in fact – in Bali but never got around to putting it up. It’s a beautiful tattoo a friend has – what makes it special is that it is done by using individual dots instead of continuous ink through a machine. It’s much more intricate and generally gorgeous. I think you’ll agree!

A ferrofluid is a made up of nanoscale ferrous particles suspended in a carrier fluid such as an oil or even water. They behave in a similar fashion to non-Newtonian fluids in the sense that you can do some rather funky stuff with them.
